We have heard humans described as being 70% water. That is true if we are looking at it by weight, however recent molecular studies demonstrate the human body is actually 99% water by molecule. That means only 1% of us are the bioactive molecules we were taught in school. Further research suggests water that encounters an interface, such as a biological membrane, spontaneously structures itself into a new form of water described as the 'Fourth Phase' of water with characteristics distinct from those we associate with bulk liquid water. The human body is full of biological membranes and interfaces suggesting almost all biological water is in the structured Fourth Phase. This new perspective of water in biological systems suggests it is no longer the inert solvent filling in the spaces but may be the key element active in the integrated functioning of human beings. 

The importance of fluids in health is one of the founding principles of Osteopathy. Andrew Taylor Still spoke emphatically about “tapping into the great river of life” in order to “irrigate the withering fields” and restore health. William Garner Sutherland expanded on Still’s vision to  proclaim the cerebrospinal fluid as the driving force behind the cranial mechanism. In fact, the cerebrospinal fluid was so potent in nature that he described it as having Intelligence, spelled with a capital ‘I’.
